First a little about me...

I am 34 years old and live in a small town in New Jersey called Piscataway. By Profession, I am an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) for UMDNJ in Newark, NJ. I provide life-saving BLS (Basic Life Support) services to the residents of Newark and the surrounding areas. In addition to being an EMT, I am also a Volunteer Firefighter for the New Market Volunteer Fire Company in Piscataway Fire District #1.

Why I do what I do...

I grew up in a small city in Kokomo, Indiana. My Grandfather was a Professional Firefighter and Fire Inspector for the City of Kokomo. During Fire Prevention Week, the Firefighters would bring the Fire trucks (also called Apparatus) to the schools to show the students. They taught the students what it was like to be a Firefighter and how to escape alive if they were ever caught in a FIRE. Being that my Grandfather was on the Fire Department, I got to try on his helmet, coat, boots and his Gold Badge. I took a lot of pride in knowing that he saved lives and property every day he was at work. He was VERY well know throughout the city and was well respected by everyone.

Years later... I now wear my own protective helmet, boots, coat and badge with the same pride and dedication that my Grandfather did while he served.

My Grandfather fell and broke his back at a fire, and has since retired. He often shared stories of his days in the Fire Department and when he ran on the Fire Department Ambulance. He has had an integral influence on me and my decision to follow in his life-saving footsteps.
